ABVP attack Dalit prof at varsity
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE Aurangabad, Aug 15: The 15-day-long lull of student activism at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University ended on Monday when students belonging to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad barged into the cabin of professor of social sciences, Dr B H Kalyankar, a renowned intellectual from the Maratha community and blackened his face, `to teach him a lesson for attacking Hindusim.' Kalyankar, had while presiding over a seminar here, where the speakers among others included Pushpa Bhave, on August 9, had allegedly made some critical comments on Hinduism, which though were not out of context on the occasion, participants said. The ABVP students first confronted Kalyankar while he was seated in the cabin of another professor in the humanities section. Here they asked him to come down to his own cabin for a discussion, and when he did, they blackened his face challenging him to dare repeat his statement in public. But a determined Kalyankar, backed by a number of student associations including the AISF and the Vidhyarti Sena, within minutes, addressed a meeting at the varsity campus expressing his resolve to stand by his statement and right to freedom of speech. The students association have given a call for an educational bandh in the city on Wednesday to protest against the ABVP. Copyright © 2000 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd. |
